What to Expect

What to Expect

When you first come to either St. John’s or St. Luke’s you’ll be welcomed at the door by one of our ‘Sidesmen’ – these are people who will give you your hymn book, your pew sheet, and your order of service. This sounds like a lot, but it’s all very easy to follow. If you have any questions the Sidesmen are exactly the right people to ask, they’ll guide you to a seat and let you know where the toilets are (we have toilets at both churches). They’ll also introduce you to people if you would like that.

Our orders of service are very easy to follow, there are very easy to understand instructions and even helpful symbols to tell you when you need stand, sit, kneel, or bow. But don’t worry about following these things, that comes with time.

If you’d like to download and read our orders of service before you come you can see them here:

Both of our churches have level access, although St. Luke’s does not have an accessible toilet. The services last about an hour. There’s lots of music, and interaction, but the service is predicable and follows the order of service closely. Large print orders of service and pew sheets are available at both services.

St. John’s is a more ordered and quiet service (9:15am), St. Luke’s (11am) is a little more relaxed and loud!

Our Family Mass on the 3rd Sunday (11am) at St. John’s is designed to be loud, interactive, and boisterous – noisy toddlers and shouting out are all part of the mix and we love it!

We have a beautiful service of BCP (Book of Common Prayer) on the 3rd Sunday of every month at St. John’s (9:15am). This service uses traditional language, has no singing, and is very easy to follow. We also have regular services of BCP Evening Prayer at both churches, you can find these in our event list.

All of our services have a time of fellowship afterwards. Tea, coffee, squash, cake – everything you’d expect. People are friendly and inviting and always enjoy a good natter, it’s also a good place to find out what coming to either church is really like. Many people stay, but a lot also leave before the tea & coffee get going.

On the 3rd Sunday of the month at St. John’s we have a time of coffee and donuts between the services – this starts at about 10:15am and allows the 9:15am BCP and the 11am Family Mass congregations to meet and talk. It’s a wonderful mix of old and young with many smiles and much love.

We’re looking forward to meeting you. If you have any questions drop us a line using the details on the contact us page.
