News for 15th June & The Week Ahead

Dearest friends,

Just a week after we celebrate the decent of the Holy Spirit into the room filled with Jesus disciples we take a moment to praise and pray for a deeper understanding of the Holy Trinity.

The Trinity pervades every aspect of our faith – it is one of the central planks of our faith – everything we do, everything we are sent out to do is done in the power of the Father, Son & Holy Spirit.

It is possible, I think, to overthink this. To try to figure out HOW this trinity of God works. We are human and modern humans attempt to understand the world through the lens of science and ‘reason’.

The issue of course is that creation is rather more complex and difficult than we can understand. We are not God and we are reaching and trying as hard as we can to understand things that He created and put into place.

It’s just not possible.

This is not to say that we shouldn’t try – that we shouldn’t engage in trying to understand the the universe through science and ‘reason’; but rather to accept that there are things that we cannot neatly fit into categories of science that are central to how we exist in the universe.

We are not God. Sometimes we need to accept that it is wiser to exist and simply appreciate and give thanks for what God has made – and our part in it.

BCP Choir, 1st Rehearsal
The Newton Abbot Parishes and St. John’s are uniting to build a new evensong choir. Our first rehearsal will be on the 19th June and the 3rd Thursday of every month thereafter at 7pm in St. John’s. We’ll start with a very simple setting.

Evensong & BCP Mass
As it’s our third Sunday we’ll be enjoying the BCP Holy Communion service at 9:15am and a sung Evensong at 5pm at St. John’s. If you’ve never come to both or either of these services I encourage you to try something (old) new.

Table Top Sale
The wonderful Table Top Sale returns to St. John’s on Saturday 21st June. Do come along and buy something lovely – it all helps with the running of the church.

Joint Mass, 29th June, 10am
June has five Sundays and so we come together again for a joint mass at 10am at St. Luke’s. After the mass there’ll be a bring and share lunch where St. Luke’s can show it’s generosity and hospitality to our brothers and sisters from St. John’s. There will be a sign up sheet in church, please be generous!

Parish Outing
On Saturday 21st June we’ll all be heading to Truro on our parish outing. We’re departing Newton Abbot Station at 08:55, so we’ll meet outside the main entrance to the train station at 08:30. Please don’t be late as I have all the tickets ready to give out! We’ve got a lovely day planned including a tour and mass at the Cathedral.
